The Department of Health and Hospitals today updated its report that outlines West Nile virus activity in Louisiana. The report notes four total cases of human West Nile virus have been detected so far in Louisiana; one case of a neuroinvasive disease, one case of fever and two asymptomatic cases.

Other findings include:

• Humans: 0 cases of other mosquito-borne illnesses (LaCrosse, Eastern Equine and St. Louis encephalitis).
• Horses: 5 confirmed cases of equine West Nile virus, 16 cases of Eastern Equine encephalitis.
• Mosquito Pools: 15,421 pools of mosquitoes have been submitted for testing. These tests confirm West Nile activity in 22 parishes.
• Wild Birds: 1,704 wild birds submitted for testing; 58 birds tested positive.

West Nile virus is spread to humans through mosquito bites, begins with flu-like symptoms and in extreme cases can lead to brain damage or death. Health officials continue to urge citizens to take the necessary precautions to limit their exposure to this virus.

Precautions include:

• Use mosquito repellant
• Wear long sleeves and long pants
• Avoid wearing perfumes or colognes when outside for prolonged periods of time.
• Remove any standing water from around homes and make sure windows and doors have secure screens.
