The Latino population in Louisiana since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita is estimated to have swelled from 120,000 people to over 175,000. Since this group has a historically low rate of HIV testing within their community, the state Office of Public Healths HIV/AIDS Program is joining forces with community-based organizations round the state to encourage HIV testing on this years National Latino AIDS Awareness Day.
On October 15, health officials will be bringing the message Wake up! Take Control! Take the HIV Test! to Latino communities throughout the state. Of the new HIV infections among Latinos in Louisiana, 25 percent were females and 61 percent were from the New Orleans Metro area. Also, 41 percent of the Latinos testing positive in 2005 received an AIDS diagnosis within one year, indicating that they received their HIV test after being infected for a significant period of time.
Assistant State Health Officer Dr. Erin Brewer explained, Cultural barriers which prevent the open discussion of sexual health issues and sexuality increasingly put Latinos at risk for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. Overall, there is little recognition of the existence of HIV, resulting in low HIV test rates among Latinos. Thats why its so important we bring this awareness effort into the communities.
Free rapid HIV testing and counseling and education will be available in both English and Spanish at various locations and times across the state. Testing is at no-cost to everyone. These events are listed by region below.
Latinos in Louisiana and HIV/AIDS: Barriers and Responses, a one-day workshop, has been scheduled in Alexandria, Louisiana on October 11, 2007.
