On Tuesday, Oct. 24, at McDonogh #35 High School in New Orleans, the Louisiana Public Health Institute (LPHI) announced the School Health Connection program and plans for utilizing an $8.7 million W.K. Kellogg Foundation Grant award to rebuild School Based Health Centers (SBHCs) destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in Metro New Orleans public schools. The plan also calls for the development of new School Based Health Centers over the next three years.
School Based Health Centers coordinated by the Louisiana Public Health Institutes School Health Connection program will provide greater access to primary and preventive care services to students, including those that are uninsured, underinsured or who may not have access to other health care facilities or care. Services offered by the health clinics will range from comprehensive and sports physicals and immunizations and behavioral health screenings to the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of clinical symptoms and conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, asthma and more.
By January 2007, four new or refurbished School Based Health Centers will be active at McDonogh #35 High School, McMain High School, New Orleans Math and Science Charter School, and Riverdale High School in Jefferson Parish. Architectural renderings for a new, modular School Based Health Center at McDonogh #35 were unveiled today. According to Marsha Broussard, Director of the School Health Connection program, SBHCs will work to provide health care services for as many as 3,500 students in the Metro New Orleans area by the end of next year.
The School Health Connection initiative represents a major step forward in restoring and expanding access to quality health care services at the community level for New Orleans area students and families, said Dr. Kevin Stephens, Director of the New Orleans Department of Public Health. School Based Health Centers will play an important role in the redesign of New Orleans health care delivery system.
The School Health Connection program, along with a Steering Committee of health care providers, community organizations, stakeholders and local school based health experts are working to maximize existing resources to achieve a higher standard of care for students and identify strategies to ensure long-term sustainability of SBHCs in the New Orleans area.
The grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation demonstrates their commitment to New Orleans recovery and helps ensure that the health care needs of New Orleans most vulnerable populations will be met while the city rebuilds, said Broussard. School Health Connection is working together with community leaders and health policy makers to address the challenge of funding School Based Health Centers for future generations.
Schools value School Based Health Centers because they help keep children in the classroom and break down barriers to learning, said Philip White, principal of McDonogh #35 High School. Studies show that School Based Health Centers increase academic performance by decreasing absenteeism, tardiness and school discipline issues. Healthy students mean a healthier future for New Orleans.

Hi!
I know I was blogging about a lot of cash advance and payday loans, but I will never be able to stop blogging about it. Whenever I see that some Web site offers other services, I would compare them with the other and, finally, a blog about their benefits. This is the actual way to evaluate any service, too.
