On Wednesday, Dec. 20, Governor Kathleen Babineaux Blanco announced the appointment of Hugh Eley as Assistant Secretary of the La. Department of Health and Hospitals Office of Aging and Adult Services.
Eley has been employed at DHH since 1997, where he served as director of the Bureau of Protective Services and then Medicaid Deputy Director. Prior to joining DHH, he worked at the Governor’s Office of Elderly Affairs.
Eley is the first assistant secretary for the Office of Aging and Adult Services, formed within the Department of Health and Hospitals as a health care reform initiative. The office brings together all of the long-term care programs that serve aging adults and people with adult-onset disabilities. These include Medicaid home and community-based long-term care programs, such as the Elderly and Disabled Adult Waiver, Adult Day Health Care Waiver, Long-Term Personal Care program and PACE.
The Office of Aging and Adult Services will also administer nursing facility admissions and develop new long-term care programs, as well as implementing other health care reform recommendations. Eley’s office will also head the operations of Villa Feliciana Geriatric Hospital, John J. Hainkel Jr. Home and Rehab Center and Adult Protective Services.
“With more than twenty years’ experience providing services for the elderly and those with disabilities, Hugh Eley will bring a wealth of knowledge to the Office of Aging and Adult Services,” Gov. Blanco said. “His leadership will be a valuable asset to those who rely on the services provided by this office.”
Eley holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Louisiana at Monroe and a Masters of Public Administration from LSU. He is a charter member of the American Academy of Certified Public Managers and a former president of the Louisiana Society of Certified Public Managers and of the Louisiana Aging Network Association.
