Heart disease, colon cancer linked

A study by Hong Kong-based researchers found that patients newly diagnosed with heart disease had nearly twice the prevalence of colorectal tumors and cancers. The study also found that colon cancer was even more prevalent in those who had smoked.

Insurance costs rise faster than pay

If you feel like health insurance costs are eating up more of your paycheck, you’re probably right. According to new research, the cost of health insurance in the U.S. climbed almost twice as fast as wages in the first half of 2007. The rising costs also outpaced inflation.

A new study suggests that breast cancer may be deadlier in African-American women for biological reasons. Previously, it was thought that the disease might be deadlier for black women because they got fewer mammograms and received less aggressive treatment than members of other races.

New schizophrenia drug shows promise

A recent clinical trial of a new drug showed that it reduced symptoms of schizophrenia without the troubling side effects of current treatments. Nevertheless, more testing is needed and the drug is several years away from being approved.
