Mom's diabetes linked to child's obesity

Time Magazine highlights a new study by researchers at Kaiser Permanente’s Center for Health Research that shows a mother’s blood-sugar level during pregnancy may be a powerful contributor to childhood obesity.

Fight cholesterol AND Alzheimer's?

Researchers claim to have found evidence that taking cholesterol-lowering statin drugs can help ward off Alzheimer’s disease. Apparently, earlier research indicated that Alzheimers may be caused by poor blood flow and vascular changes in the brain, which statins can help prevent.

Louisiana 4th most "obese" state

A new study by Trust for America’s Health shows obesity rates rose in most states during the past year. According to the report, Louisiana has the fourth highest rate of adult obesity in the country.

High blood pressure a problem in kids

Researchers estimate that there are now about 2 million kids and teens in the U.S. with high blood pressure. The scientists point out that the problem may be underreported because it is difficult to diagnose hypertension in children.

Heart disease deadlier for diabetics

According to new research by investigators at Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital, death from heart disease is twice as likely for diabetics than for those without diabetes.

Panel recommends tobacco taxes, PE

The President’s Cancer Panel – a three-member group of experts that monitors the nations fight against cancer – has recommended that the federal government increase taxes on tobacco products and strictly regulate tobacco sales and marketing. In addition, the panel recommended that schools reinstate physical education from kindergarten through senior year.

Migraines = stroke risk in women?

According to a new study, women whose migraine headaches produce visual symptoms may be at an increased risk for stroke. The study also concluded that oral contraceptives and smoking increase this risk.
