Are first-born children smarter?

A Norwegian study claims that first-born children score higher on intelligence tests than younger siblings. They also claim that the reason for this may be how parents treat their first-born child, rather than what happens while the child is still in the womb.

A warning for parents who smoke

It is already known that parental smoking is a leading risk factor for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, but a new study shows that babies with at least one parent who smokes have much higher levels of a potentially harmful nicotine byproduct in their systems than babies of nonsmoking parents.

LA gets low marks in health care report

A new ‘health care report card’ is out and Louisiana didn’t perform well. The Commonwealth Fund Commission, a private non-profit foundation that promotes a high-performing health care system, issued the report, which gave the state low marks for such things as infant mortality and deaths from cancer. A study published in this week’s Journal of the American Medical Association claims that black patients are less likely than white patients to receive “invasive, aggressive treatments” following a heart attack.
FDA-approved weight-loss pill arrives
