Despite the devastation of the 2005 hurricane season, most Americans do not take even the basic steps to prepare for disaster situations, according to a 2006 survey released by the American Red Cross. In fact, according to the survey, 60 percent made no specific evacuation plans and 73 percent did not practice a family disaster plan.

In order to help Louisiana residents take these basic steps toward emergency preparedness, the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals and the Louisiana Public Health Institute have partnered on the Stay Healthy Louisiana campaign. Below, you will find links to critical information on the Stay Healthy Louisiana site that can help you ready yourself and your family for hurricane season:

I personaly will not leave the city this hurricane season. Being on disability living in a fema trailer with no outlook of affordable housing i would rather stay and be blown away with the rest of the trash.

Dear Keith, I beg you to reconsider. It breaks my heart to hear that you would rather be "blown away with the rest of the trash." Every person with a disability has value, rights and we need you! My son has a disability and I can't even imagine the world without him! If you are need of guidance please contact your local Families Helping Families office for information on how you can receive transportation out of the city and supports and services available to individuals with disabilities. Please feel free to email me at fhf-la@cox.net and I will direct you to your nearest office--there's one in every region of LA. Again, please reconsider evacuating. Our state has lost too many valuable incredible people because they could not or would not evacuate due to their disability.

Keith: I can recognize your courage in your words. I escaped from Cuba in a rubber tire after been imprissioned twice for political reasons. At the boat, my thougts were: better to be eaten by the sharks than to live enslaved by Fidel Castro. Instead of considering yourself worthy of being blowing out with the trash, realize that the trash is NOT you: it is your major. You are ea FREE man. Stand up and accuse him, do it for yourself and for all others who has not the courage you REALLY have. Don't ALLOW him to lead the city into disaster anymore. YOU will be a better Major. Thanks for your attention. Ricardo.
