  • Wear work gloves, long pants, long sleeved shirts, dry socks, eye protection, and water-tight work boots with a steel toe
  • Avoid wading in water which could contain broken glass, metal fragments and other objects and chemical substances
  • Wear a hard hat if necessary
  • Do not enter a building if it could be structurally unsound

To treat injuries:

  • Immediately clean wounds with soap and clean water
  • Cover wounds with clean, dry bandages
  • Use antibacterial ointment if possible
  • Change bandages as needed and whenever drainage (pus) can be seen through the bandage
  • If you come into contact with a hazardous chemical, wash the area thoroughly with clean, decontaminated water and seek medical help
  • Contact a doctor, a tetanus shot or further medical attention may be needed
