In order to prevent fires:

  • DO NOT smoke or toss matches near debris or chemically tainted water
  • Use flashlights or other battery-operated lights instead of candles. If you must use candles:
    • Place them in safe holders away from flammable items
    • Do not leave a candle burning unattended
    • Have at least 2 fire extinguishers with a UL rating of at least 10A at every clean up job

Beware of drowning and water hazards

  • Avoid moving water and do not drive through flooded roads
  • If you must work near flood water, wear a life jacket or flotation device
  • Standing water and soil may be contaminated; avoid contact, or wash with anti-bacterial soap and clean water

Prevent temperature-related injuries:

When working in hot weather:

  • Wear light, loose-fitting clothing
  • Drink water and non-alcoholic fluids often
  • Take breaks often in shaded, cooler areas
  • Do outdoor activities during cooler hours of the day

When working in cool (75 Deg F or below) water:

  • Wear rubber boots and insulated clothing
  • Take breaks out of the water
  • Change into dry clothing whenever possible
  • DO NOT walk in contaminated water without protective boots

Carbon Monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can be deadly at high levels, so in order to avoid this danger:

  • Never use generators, pressure washers, grills, stoves or other gasoline, propane, or charcoal-burning devices inside or near a door, window or vent
  • DO NOT heat your home with a gas oven or stovetop burners
  • Quickly seek medical attention if you are feeling dizzy, light-headed or nauseated

Chainsaws are dangerous tools, so to use one safely:

  • Follow the manufacturers instructions for use and periodically check the tension of the chain saw blade
  • Wear protective clothing such as work gloves and eye protection
  • Avoid contact with power lines
  • Always cut wood at waist level or below, not
    overhead
  • Make sure bystanders are at a safe distance from falling branches, etc.

Chemicals and dangerous materials need special attention:

  • Call the fire department to remove chemicals, propane tanks and other dangerous materials
  • DO NOT handle hazardous materials without wearing protective clothing, gloves, mask and gear (i.e. a respirator)
  • Rinse skin that has contacted hazardous chemicals with clean water continuously for 10-20 minutes
  • Call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222
  • Wear insulated gloves and use caution if you need to remove a car battery
