After a disaster or during an emergency in which loss of utilities and water is a factor, it may take several days for water and sewer services to be restored. Keep stored water safe to drink and use. If you are concerned about the safety of your water supply for drinking, you can purify it by using one of the following methods:
- Boil water for 10 minutes and pour between containers to replenish oxygen.
- Add eight (8) drops of liquid chlorine bleach (5.25 percent sodium hypochlorite/NO soap) per gallon.
- Add water purification tablets, following manufacturer’s instructions.
- To store water in a freezer, do the following:
- Place in plastic bags or other leak-proof containers
- Only fill about 2/3 (water expands when freezing)
- Allow to melt prior to use
